Okay, with us seriously looking at getting the track for the LLLL, I need a helmet.

I have a very large head, so the helmet must fit 7 7/8 inch hat size or a bit larger.

Only suggestion that I can give you is check with your local tracks and see which safety rating they approve of.

For any track and for safety I go with NHRA approved ratings. NHRA requires a helmet meeting SNELL K98, M2000, SA2000, M2005, or SA2005 specifications. DOT approved helmets are not approved ratings for IHRA or NHRA requirements. I bought a SNELL approved helmet as its the cheapest in those ratings plus I feel much safer in it, then just a DOT approved helmet since almost any helmet now a days meets DOT requirements.

Looking at those helmets, all of them are only DOT approved = shit. I would spend a little extra on a SNELL or M2000 helmet for the added security and knowing that you can race at any track with it.

Also, make sure that the cert of improvement is sewed in on the inside of the helmet, not just a decal or stencil on the outside.

One last note, I wouldn't buy online unless you know how it fits. Some helmets run big for the size some run small, some are annoying as hell and some don't fit right. I would try out all helmets before purchasing.

GL withing finding the right one for you. Take it seriously, as it could save your life one day.

 

All I've been able to find for the road course track is...

HELMETS: All drivers must wear a racing type helmet with a SA2000 or newer while on the track or while driving the race car in the pits. Eye protection with a face shield or goggles is required. No motorcycle helmets may be used in racecars.

I thought one I posted was SA2000 approved?

As for buying one online, I can't find ANYONE around here that has one that will fit me. I usually don't buy stuff without trying first.

 

Sandia may have helmets available for rent. But more than likely not.

Search for large scale motorcycle shops in your area. The bigger ones usually have a pretty good selection. The best deals are on-line though.

 

You can't use motorcycle or snowmobile helmets on the track. More times then none those are only DOT approved.

Jer, those 3 you posed aren't SA2000, SA2000 usually go for $300+.

Stick with a SNELL helmet, as it's the cheapest and safest helmet you can buy unless you trap 150mph in the 1/4 lol. I suggest you take a drive and find a credible race shop/performance parts stores.

 

Actually, for just road course, they've let folks use motorcycle helmets.

The other track, when you are at like 11 seconds or less, you have to wear a helmet.

 

At the 1/4 mile track it is anything under 14 requires a helmet.

 

Unkay. I was off by a few. Something else for under 11's. Parachute? Fire suit?
