did the few Apexi exhaust that WERE made provided room for an aftermarket (or stock) cat to be in place or are they true performance exhaust eliminating the cat?

They're catbacks. You can bolt a cat on before the cb easily. Ideally, you should get aftermarket headers which lead to a HF Cat which leads to the Apexi.
