I had it but never installed it. I didnt feel that the high price justified the kit. I bought it used and sold it to someone who then sold it again, lol.

 

Hobgoblin had it when we first met here in ABQ. About 2 or 3 years ago. It's not the new kit, and it's not since Alpine's move.

A base unichip map? The unichip COMES rough tuned, but you need it tuned for your car, and your elevation and such guys.

 

yeah that's another thing, I didn't like the whole unichip idea.

 

Yeah, I just looked and there's not a unichip tuner that I can find in the STATE of New Mexico. A couple of Mail Order places though, but I'm not going to mail order tuning. LOL

 

Well it comes rough tuned but they also carry plug and play for specific mod combination and such.

 

well good news for the unichip thing.. there are a lot of people that work in shops, that are going thru unichip training, to be able to tune the chip.. a year ago i was at a car show and talked to a guy with a mini coop. that had unichip sticker on it, and asked about it.. he said he was in training to tune the unichip, and there were about 10 other in his class with him.. or w/e it was.. i guess its a nationwide thing, because alot of mini coopers locally use the unichip and are VERY happy with the results..

so maybe there are going to be alot of licensed unichip tuners to come soon, just have to ask around..

 

Well this post has been a long time coming so here goes......

I started hanging around the original Hyundai Aftermarket and haven't posted alot over the years but I have read alot of posts dealing with forced induction.

I am one of the few people on the site here that have had the Alpine kit for a long time (about 4 years now) and have never had any major problems with the kit. During the summer months my Tib is my daily driver. If anyone was worried about support Dave Dickson is an awesome guy, I have talked to him online many times and he has always been very helpful.

Think about it guys who else makes a "bolt on" turbo kit for Tibs that doesn't end up making a few R&D kits then splits and leaves everyone hanging. As well intentioned as their efforts may be, things always seem to go downhill after a few kits go out and are installed and there are tons of bugs to work out. I don't need to mention names of past adventures. Anyone who has been watching the turbo scene on RD Tiburon know what I am talking about. Props to guys like Airbourne and Viper for trying to get a kit together but it would appear that only a few kits will ever be made and another effort is lost.

Alpine is the only one that has made a kit for our cars for how many years now?? It's like pulling teeth to get any kind of aftermarket parts made for us, lets get behind Alpine and let them know what we want!

As far as the current kit goes all the components are pretty damn tough, have any of you guys actually held the cast log exhaust manifold that comes with the kit?? There is no way no how that mother is ever gonna crack like so many tubular manifolds out there. For a log style manifold it flows better than you would think. Does the kit put out uber amounts of horsepower right out of the box, maybe not but there are things that can be tweaked on the kit to bump numbers up. (By the way the Alpine manifold will accept a GT28RS, just need to change your downpipe flange.)Running 10 psi you can net around 200WHP which is a fair bit for a 2800 lb car. Alpine has a dyno sheet posted on their site for a BETA II that pushes 226WHP@12 psi, these are decent numbers guys. How many of you have actually been in a boosted Tib?? Dave Dickson was pushing around 280WHP with his kit!

Yes I would say the one PITA thing with the Alpine kit would be the tuning aspect of the Unichip depending on if an authorized tuner is located near you. But like SOCKS says it sounds like there are more trainees coming soon. Once again talk to Dave Dickson he is always there to hook you up and help you out with tuning issues.

It amazes me how many guys want to do all their tuning themselves when they really have no experience in the field. Honestley I would like to tune my car myself as well but I don't have the time to REALLY know what I am doing. I am not risking thousands of hard earned dollars to say "Hey after melting a few pistons etc, I think I have some idea how to tune my car!" LOL I am a hands on guy but there comes a certain point where you have to let the pros help ya out.

What numbers do I run with my kit?? Well I actually haven't ever had it dynoed or been to the track. I just don't have the facilities where I live. But I can walk away on my brother in laws GK V6 with an intake like nothing. I have just enjoyed being boosted, isn't that what it's really all about in the end? I didn't buy a turbo so I can stand around with the guys and say"Oh yeah I have a turbo and can put out X amount of HP so beat that!!" Just ends up being a big immature pissing contest! I went turbo for ME not for all the other ricer fart can tuners out there waiting to race anything, anytime, anywhere, even if the car they are racing is a pile of pot smoking young punks in a Geo. I will get a dyno and do some track runs eventually just cause I am curious.

Going wayyyy back to when Random had his kit is going back to the stoneages. It seems frightingly ironic that any turbo horror stories out there are always in conjuction with the owner having no gauges to monitor what is going on with the engine! If you are adding like and extra 100WHP to your car you NEED guages to monitor what is going on!! (I am not saying the was Hobs problems he he)Forced induction can be a finicky beast especially when the car wasn't that way from the factory.

I guess I have ranted enough but I think the Alpine kit has gotten an unfair bad rep on this site. *Cough* REDZ drillsergeant.gif wink1.gif
