Pic Request - Widebody Rd1
#2
Alot of the old skoolers who have been around for many years, may remember the Proto Designs Widebody Kit. There has been ALOT of discussions about it on Hyundai Aftermarket in the past also. This kit if pretty much the best quality widebody kit for RD1's out there, however....there's a catch to it. Proto is located in Korea and there are no companies outside of Korea that sell or install it. Reason being is that they widen the body, actually cutting into sheet metal, doing some extensive body work on the rear quarter panels to put in some air intake holes, as well as the doors and front fenders. So, this kit is NOT available in the states, unless you want to ship your car to Korea and get it done there and have it shipped back out. The cost of the kit also will run close to $7,000 because its an all metal kit...no fiberglass at all.
There are more pics on HA, but I cant post them here because I have image sharing turned off.
There are alot of kits and parts out there however that include fender flares, that you could mold onto your stock fenders and quarter panels to give it a sort of wide body look. Another idea is to find a set of Gorilla Z Shark fenders for the RD1, but those are almost as rare as the Proto Designs kit. Tibbychick has a set on her car.

Yeah it's mine!
I did a RD2 conversion for the back... I prefer the RD2 hatch wingless
My kit is a WingsWest lip kit molde to the car with custom fender flare.
I have wheel spacer with press fit stud in it.
If you wanna see the full process :

Most of those just have fiberglass flares molded to the body. Their not true actual widebodies, like what you're looking for. Other than Proto (which hasnt been doing much with widebodies these days....their more into doing limos and stuff like that now)...you're only other option is to find someone who knows how to do metal work really well. You could do your own widebody with sheet metal, but you would have to find presses to bend everything flawlessly and someone who isnt afraid of cutting stock body metal into swiss cheese, then welding the new sheetmetal in. tongue.gif wink1.gif Your math and dimensions would have be 100% on point or else you could have one side of the car looking off or crooked, depending on where the new metal was welded in, and how well it was pressed.
You could also do it with fiberglass and rivet a homemade widebody kit into the stock body, but I wouldnt trust that very much. A regular kit, maybe...but definitely not a widebody, unless you wont be driving the car on a daily basis and will only keep it as a trailer queen.
Only way I would trust to drive a widebody on a daily basis is if it was all metal and welded directly to the car.

visionz: yeah exactly. I actually know of a place that does all these type of bodywork using sheetmetal.
but the problem is, i can't seem to find anything that will look good on the RD1. Problem with the RD1 is that it is just too damn curvy all over. To go widebody the car would definately be "boxed" up.
