Actually, that's one of the engine's greatest features. It is a very efficient engine, turning more than 50% of the energy in the fuel into rotational motion, vs. 25%-30% for typical automotive engines.
Sure it's big and takes a lot of fuel, but when you're moving a ship the size of a city you pretty much have to use a lot of fuel.
