What used car for $6-8k

My friend is selling his old 93 Ranger, and getting a car. He's looking at a 94-97 accord... maybe a civic or integra.. he doesn't know yet.
He wants to go pure engine, but won't listen to me when I tell him to get a 240sx with an engine swap and conversion to a Silvia...
so for $6-8k with less than 60,000 miles, what car would you recommend? He's only 17, in high school still, and has a kid, so he needs something that is cheap to fix up and that will last a while. 2door or 4door will work.
What would you do?
