Zoned, i agree with your point fully on the use of the word gay. i don't feel that word is used to show hatred towards someone. "Fag" on the other hand is more harsh of a term and, yes, i feel is hate-speak.
i don't, however, have the same views on the N word. to me, it depends on the race of the person saying it. noone other than a black person should say that word. that is a definate form of hatred if a white person were to say it.
