Many people do not realise that in 1981 there were only a few car makers offering their wares with boost. Porsche is the best known with the 930 (turbo 911) and Chrysler was still playing with rear wheel drive cars.. the "K car" had just come out with a small and anemic four cylinder.

That year Fiat signed a contract with Legend Industries to boost some 1000 Fiat 124 Spider 2000s. This involved a small IHI turbo, a special exhaust manifold, and vacume switches to handle the fuel load for the slight amount of boost.

Stock, the Fiat 124 2000 made 102 hp thanks to the addition of Fuel injection in 1981. The turbo model was rated at 120 hp. Not a big gain, but it was only a 6psi turbo with no intercooler and very simple fuel and spark control

Here is a picture of the stock Turbo Spider's Boost gage. Usually there is also a sticker involved that says "no boost when cold" Notice there is NO numbers.. just an area for no boost, boost, and overboost..

Looks like they were budget minded when they decided on boost gauges.

You have to remember the day that was made... people just did not know about boost.. most still don't. Coloured areas of the gage work best for most people. It is only the motorheads and boost freaks who really need to know the exact PSI.

What is funny.. the turbo made 120 hp.. in 1985 They made a supercharged spider for Europe only (Pininfarina stopped making bodyshells in 1985) that produced about 140 hp.

Unlike the Turbo spider which was fuel injected, the SUpercharged car was carbed.. the supercharger sucked THROUGH the carb and directly into the head.
