Ok, for those of yall who know, and those who dont, i work for good ole uncle sam. Unfortunately ive had the great luck of being stationed here at ft jackson, SC. Now dont get me wrong, the environment, hell even the barracks is good, I only have one major issue with the place. Seems here that everyone is only out for themselves because they have too much time on their hands. Sad really, but ive definately seen other places with more unit cohesion. To give an example, (i dont mind working holidays, its just the principal of the fact...) Ive been here well over a year and have yet to have an actual holiday or 3 day weekend off. EVERYONE i know has had at least one of each. I love my job, but because my leadership has managed to fail me in every way since ive been here, im getting burnt out.

Ex:
(1) I was supposed to pick up E4 in jan., but got screwed over by the above mentioned

(2) They knew ahead of time, 6 wks in fact, about my surgery on my back, and still couldnt figure out that i needed to be supervised at least 24 hrs discharge from the hospital, even when i told them repeatedly. Was left for the most part on my own when i couldnt even walk.

(3) Not long ago i ended up in the hospital when i got violently ill and noone except ONE of the new Captains that jsut got here like 2 months ago came to check on me during a 3 day stay, minus a 5 min visit from the oic THE WHOLE TIME. (Thanks cpt miller, i appreciate the time you took out of your busy schedule to sit and chat a bit. Seems like only you and one or 2 of the civillians even cared)

I know it sounds like this should be in the gripes and complaints section, but honestly, im over it by now. The reason its here is that im just asking some opinions on places to go when my reenlistment window opens in June. Im going to put up a poll after i list the options/pros/cons below. If i could get some opinions, and explanations as to why, things would be greatly appreciated folks!!! I love you guys and your advice does mean a lot because i honestly dont have a clue what i want to do. Thanks in advance!

Options:

(1) Reclass to 68T (vet tech) and after school get sent wherever the army sends me.

Pros: 68T is one of ONLY 2 mos's that can be stationed at an airforce base. I can reenlist for 2 yrs and reclass to this, then in a year reenlist again for a specific air force base (Im thinking out in new mexico/arizona/texas. Ive always loved it out there.)

Cons: I have no control what that first duty station will be and will have to clear post here before i leave for 2 1.2 months schooling, schoolhouse (ft sam houston) is booked out and ill have to wait a couple months to get into school, going back into "training" status

(2) Ft Gordon, GA

Pros: I have a couple friends there, and even though barracks there arent as nice, ive been told by several people that leadership/treatment there is MUCH better

Cons: Other than the pros, theres nothing there for me, one friend is deploying, and its closer to my family (yes thats a con, i joined the army to get away from them) having to wait a long time for orders to be cut

(3) Schofield Barracks, Hawaii/Tripler AMC/25th ID

Pros: Im from FL so the obvious environment, (all the beaches i want, which i love) beautiful sites, possible better leadership, makes more money (some special allowance...cant remember what its called) more than likely deployment

Cons: I dont know anyone there, separation/harder time getting back and taking leave to see friends and those i care about, having to get new insurance, higher living costs, i sunburn easily, more than likely deployment, I dont know how long orders would take to come down from HQ

(4) Ft Bliss, TX

Pros: I love the environment there especially the southwesterness, close to ABQ (3-4 hrs), BIG base, close to mexico, BIG hospital if i work there/could go to a line unit, possible deployment, good food (lol), i know for a fact they have openings for 68X's (my mos, mental health specialist) so its possible i could be out of here in a couple months, ive heard there are nice barracks.

Cons: I dont know all too much about the environment, good chance of deployment, dont know anyone there, sunburn easily, im sure theres more but i cant really think clearly right now.

Anyhow, like i said i appreciate all of your opinions, and if you have any more suggestions feel free to let me know where and why. Remember, it has to ba an army base unless i reclass. I love my job but i would love being a vet tech too... At this point, i dont care where i go as long as it has better/more unit cohesion than this place. Again, thanks in advance!

I'd say for SURE do the reclass.

You can move wherever you want when you get out, but you can only get so many opportunities for paid training.

As for not getting retrained...

Fort Bliss.

Last time I was there it was just "ok", but it's pretty damned nice now, and a MAJOR base. It's warm year round, HOT for some of it, and when you go to the field in White Sands, you have barracks, with air conditioning. There is a PLDC academy there, SGT Major Academy, ANOC and BNOC and 1SG Academy too. There are some AIT's so there's always a good sense of comraderie, not to mention brand new PVT's to kick around.

LOL

The PX and PX2 are both brand new, and very nice, the chow halls are all civillian run, and you can get breakfast burritos every day. LOL

Close to Mexico so you can go down (go past Juarez, that place sucks) and visit the "dirty Korea" whenever you want. Las Cruces is nice, and right across the border in NM.

El Paso isn't my dream town for sure, but it's big, with plenty to do.

BTW, when you reclass, you CAN get preference to where you go, just ask for it as a stipulation of your reenlistment.

I did.

I voted reclass. The army dosn't really want vet-techs. They actually usually have an out-call on them and they relcass when they re-enlist, but the air force thing is cool.

Update:

Ok well a LOT of crap has gone down in the past 3-4 weeks, some of the worst weeks i can say in my life and i am now decided. I will be reclassing. Hopefully they wil be able to get me a slot in the class, hopefully soon. Because of all thats happened ive decided i dont want to be what i am now anymore. I have a lot going on, and this way i can stay in the medical field AND be able to deal with my issues too. Im hoping ill get into the 68T (vet tech) class and get stationed at an AFB but we will see. I will let everyone know more when i can take a pt test. Im flagged right now since i havent been able to take one for over a year, but i plan on taking one 1st week of october, so i will know sometime soon.......
