You could always do this...

1. Call Microsoft.

2. Tell them you are getting the red ring of death.

3. Go through the troubleshooting, letting them know it pops up now and then, and that you are having trouble with your disk drive.

4. Get them to fix both under warranty.

I do not have a 360, but I stay up on the scene. I'm waiting until there's better software out there. Once they come up with some good stuff, i'll be in line at the PX with one in my hand and modification parts already on order.

Right now the 360 as a modification platform does not impress me. My xbox does more then a 360. I'm waiting until they come up with a few good dashboards and some emulators to work woth modified units like with the origonal xbox. It's looking somewhat bleak right now.

Yes, they have modified firmware/mismatching firmware, and most were playing burned games, but I'd rather not risk it myself.

You'll be fine as long as you do not play burned games. Of the 4,000 who were banned, they were all playing "backups" of games which were recorded improperly. In the origonal recordings of 360 games, the coders of the burning software put props to their buddies and logos in the recordings. This is detectable through a simple CRC check.

People with swapped drives are fine. People with modified drives are fine. People with modified drives playing burned games are fine. People with modified drives playing improperly burned games were banned.

From everything I've read, xbox cannot detect/does not care about modified firmware. They just want to make sure you are buying their games. IMO, If you need to do a repair, do it right and keep buying their video games.

What is the point of buying a system to mod it? It's illegal to modify it, so that won't be discussed here. The only reason to modify your system is to play illegal copies of games.

Period.

And yes, the previous banning earlier in May this year was for modified firmware and hardware, they can do it anytime they want.

The software on the 360 is the best out of any of the consoles.

NO! I have my modified xbox hooked as an internet appliance, to play over 1,000 channels of internet radio, funny video clips, internet television, pornography, and so on and so forth.. It also functions as my media center and access all shared audio/video/pictures i have shared on my network.

Of course burned video games are a plus, but I havn't played a game on xbox since my buddy got his 360. I havn't even bothered to configure my computer to work in real time. My computer is my TV and it records before playing so that I can seamlessly rewind/fast foreward.

As for the bannings, check xbox-scene again. They updated it. It was not for modified firmware, they banned based on signatures found in the recorded games. Modified firmware is safe.

having second thoughts about sending it to MS. i'm worried i won't get my 360 back for a month if not more. the Llamma's site with the firmware replacement seems to be pretty easy if its just unscrewing and unplugging. easy cake.

i personally luv my 360. gears of war, mass effect (sadly not played yet), viva pinata (very fun when you get into it), halo 3 online play, CoD 4, and a few titles that are coming out at the start of next year. thats why i bought it now, plus you can get familiar with the system
