Yeah, we need a food thread. As far as I'm concerned, maki sushi represents the highest culinary form in the world. smile.gif A single roll appears so simple in it's presentation, yet it requires a great deal of preparation, highest quality ingredients, and skill to make. And (like Korean food from what I'm hearing), you can't judge it until you've tried it from a real chef done right. I can almost promise you won't find good sushi at a single "Japanese steakhouse" in the U.S. which is truly a bastardization of Japanese food, just like all the greasy cantonese food we see. Although there's a few good ones here in VA, I will often drive 2+ hours to DC just to eat good sushi. It's worth it. Same goes for northern style Dim Sum in Rockville, MD.

We have a sizeable Korean population here, enough that there are quite a few Korean churches. So there are some authentic restaurants and plenty of Korean markets. At least as far as I can tell, I will usually be the only English speaking person in there, which is usually a good sign.

I am anti-cabbage, and anti- pickled anything except ginger, so I often go with the hot pots. If I want barbecued meat I will usually go for vietnamese or thai, wrapping them in rice paper with basil and rice noodles is great. But I would eat nothing but sushi if I could afford it. wink1.gif

^^^ dude, we have here cucumbers, tomatos that was salted with spices in wooden cans for couple of weeks (no vinegar), it's so tasty.

And it's the best - salted cucumber + vodka, lol.

Korea has their own version of the Sushi rolls, called Kimbop. You can do a search for them and find it. I love that stuff, with crab or ham in it, but raw fish, I just can't handle, no matter who makes it.

Kimchee is awesome. The first time I went to Korea, I couldn't eat it for the first few days, and to be honest, it wasn't good unless I got it from a actual Korean restraunt down in the Ville. After a few tries of different kinds, I love it. There are thousands of kinds of Kimchee, and some of them include stuff like fish heads, squid parts, ect. No thanks to those.

Pretty standard Cabbage Kimchee. (Yes, it's spelled Kimchi, but it's pronounced Kimchee). Very good, and usually, pretty spicy.

BTW, Kimchee is said to be the reason why Korea didn't get one, not even a suspected case, of SARS.



Mandu is another favorite. It's basicly a usually fried (Yakimandu) pot sticker. Very very very very good, and you can find it everywhere over there.




Sometimes it's steamed or done into a soup called Mandu Soup of all things. God, my absolute favorite soup ever.

Korean BBQ, is my personal favorite. You sit at a table with a charcoal or other type of burner and cook your own pre marinated food. Chicken, Beef, Pork, Deer, whatever they have. The food is amazing, and you just cook it, wrap it up in lettuce leaves with some rice and other toppings at the table (Kimchee, chilie paste, peanut chili paste, pickled daikon, garlic, ect.), and stuff the whole thing in your mouth.

I love good steak. Fliet mignon rare (room temp atcenter) is my favorite food. I think my second favorite is the dark meat on beer but chicken.

They make about 15 jars every 3 months.

every day... every day.. kimchi kimchi kimchi.. We also have a special Kimchi Refrigerator and another refrigerator for other stinky stuff.. We have kimchi of all kinds.. 2 months old, 6 months old(the best kind), 1 year old, 3 years old.

wierd thing is that I'm not sick of it..

It's hard to get sick of it once you get the taste. Kinda like Pink Taco. Once you get the taste of it, you will eat it whenever you can.
