My brother just did a science project on these little babies. They really will fight each other to the death. It sounds sadistic but he based the project on the myth that animals/fish/anything will defend themselves and their territory to the death. He used the Betta's cause that was the cheapest/easiest way to go.

Names were Brutus, and Maximus I think.

Maximus died in battle.

Actually, most of them don't fight to the death. They will fight until the other backs off. When they do fight though, their fins will grow back, so it's nothing to worry about. When people want to breed bettas and the male isn't receptive to the female, people will fight 2 male bettas until one backs off. When they fight for females, they won't fight to the death. They fight until one thinks it can't do it anymore. The whole instinct is to fight for a female, so as soon as the winning male is done with the fight, he goes right over and struts his shit to mate with the female.

Anyway, here is my betta. He's a Crown betta, and they actually were "created" in 1997 by some hobby betta breeder in Taiwan. Another recently "created" betta is the Cambodian betta, whom look similar to the Crown betta, but VERY brightly colored. Crown bettas are usually darker, while Cambodian bettas are usually very bright (whites, purples, yellows, blues, etc). Oh yeah, my Crown betta's name is Haruki. smile.gif

I always thought that beta's would fight to the death... but I definately know that if you put a beta in a cichlid tank that it will get beat to death...I told my sister, but she wouldn't listen.

I told my dad the same thing. He has a 44 gallon tank with lots of fish... Cichlids being a few. Poor betta never stood a chance.

Cichlid is a species of fish. There are many verieties.

Check this site for basic fish varieties: http://www.aquariacentral.com/species/fw-ae.shtml
