Default $58B High Speed Rail to Nowhere

Wow no thread on this yet?

WASHINGTON — The U.S. government will dedicate $53 billion over six years to build new high-speed rail networks and make existing ones faste, Vice President Joe Biden said Tuesday.

The initiative will allow the Department of Transportation to choose corridors for the new projects and increase U.S. use of the passenger rails, the White House said in a statement.

President Barack Obama's budget for fiscal year 2012, which is to be unveiled next week, includes $8 billion for the plan. The rest of the money will be allocated over the six-year time period.

Don't forget money for this must be allocated by the new Republican-majority Congress.

You know, if this promised to be 100% American I might... MIGHT stand behind the idea just for economic boost. But a 250mph rail system just promises to be Chinese nonsense

That and this has been hot topic for over 20 years. Money keeps being wasted on projects that go nowhere, flushed in a pathetic attempt at a new (to us) form of mass transit. But I forgot, this is "change." And where the hell are they proposing to launch this service?! I have read several articles about this but no such info exists. The Florida, California and Carolina rails are state system, where is this fed line supposed to run? Also they had better not used the AMTRAK name, that alone will scare away 90% of their potential clientele. Can we say "fail"?

And like Stocker said, after a few years new votes will need to be cast to allocate the remaining 47 billion according to this plan. Why does this sound like a trap to convince the public in 6 years that Democins need the office again. It all reeks of that oil speculation garbage from 3-4 years ago that cost us decent gas prices for all eternity.
