Word a 10-year-old has given birth may sound like nothing more than tabloid fodder, but not only is it true, she’s far from the world’s youngest mother ever.
Last month an unnamed 10-year-old gave birth to a healthy baby girl in Colombia after arriving at the hospital with “enormous pain” due to contractions. ABC reports the child’s baby girl, who was born via c-section, weighed in at just five pounds. The young mom is a member of the Wayuu people, an indigenous tribe in northern Colombia. While the age of the father is unknown, police reportedly would be unable to press any charges against him even if deserving because the tribe has its own jurisdiction.

Sadly, this 10-year-old Colombian girl who has given birth is not the world’s youngest mother ever. Wikipedia reports on the case of Lina Medina from Peru, seen here in 1939, who gave birth at age 5.
Lina Medina’s case appears to be possible because of precocious puberty, which caused her to develop breasts by age 4 and fully-functioning sexual organs by age 5. On May 14, 1939 young Lina became a mother via c-section, welcoming a 6 pound baby boy she named Gerardo after her doctor. He was raised believing that Medina was his sister, but found out at the age of 10 that she was his mother.
Lina went on to marry in the 1970s, and even welcomed a second child around age 40. As of 2002 she was said to still be living with her husband in Peru and refusing all offers to speak to the press. The father of her first son was never able to be identified, and it is not clear if she knows his true identity or not.
Young mothers in the United States
The list of the world’s youngest mothers also includes a number of entries from the United States. Among them are two 9-year-olds, and twenty-four 10-year-olds. The most recent of which was the 2008 case of a girl from Idaho who gave birth to a daughter after being raped by her mother’s boyfriend.
Other states on the list in the last decade include Connecticut, California, Ohio, Missouri, and Michigan.
