Actually, he tampered with the safety valve and had the bottle heater directly hooked up to the battery, so when he shut off the car, the heater didn't shut off. You should always have the heater hooked up to an ignition switch so that there is no way for it to be on when the car is not. Also, it is speculated that he did not have the "on" light hooked up, or in his view, so that he knew when it was on.
