Tried jumping my car today, it wouldnt turn over..let the battery charge a little longer (it was dead)
After awhile, tried starting it again and it cranked for awhile then I heard a "POP" noise, sounded almost like a backfire...me and my friend looked at each other like wtf?
So I let it charge for a long time, came back and tried to start it and there's just this little "whirring" sound like it's spinning and not catching....
what could the problem be? starter?

thanks guys

You need a new starter. I had the same problem before, "whirring" is definately the best way to describe it. Apparently the ears broke off the starter so that it no longer engaged the flywheel.

That's what I thought...any reason they keep going on this car?
I bought the car and the starter was bad, so I replaced it then...that was about 8 months ago?
wtf. Starters shouldn't just go bad randomly this often..

Oh and the fuses were fine.

change your battery read the first sentence u wrote u hit rite on.
your battery is not holding electricity any more, either through neglect or age. check the water in your battery. but im perdy sure its just bad. if it was your starter u would know and your battery wouldnt have been dead.

anyway trust me its the battery

edit: ok don't trust me but take it to autozone and get it tested anyway nana.gif

just fully recharge the battery

you cannot jump start the car with fully discharged battery, cause fuel pump will not pump any gas and ECU will be off and so on.

okay, maybe I should have been more clear.

The second time I tried to jump it, the battery was fully charged and it was still connected to the other car's battery.

So is it the starter?

A dead battery does not cause a whirring sound when attempting to start the car. I maintain it's the starter. There's no indication of a dead battery.

starter spinning + crank not spinning = Live battery + dead starter

I suppose it COULD be the teeth on your flywheel are gone, but I'd bet the starter gives before the flywheel.

yea, i'm thinking starter as well from what you've told us, cause i'm gathering that you're not hearing the usual cranking sound you get before the car starts, instead you're hearing a winding kind of noise. i don't think it would be the flywheel either, the chances are slim to none.
