Alright, I'm finishing up my auto -> manual conversion and I've got a small problem. I accidentally gave the junkyard my vehicle speed sensor as part of my core. On the manual transmission I now have (from an 04 Elantra with 19k miles), they gave me the speed sensor and both ends of the plug are still installed. I can do one of two things.

1. Go to the yard and get one from an automatic, install it, done.
2. Solder over the new connector and hope it all works properly.

Can anyone see why number two wouldn't work? Both have only three wires, though the colors are different. HMAservice's site isn't displaying vehicle speed sensor diagrams for the XD elantras or I'd be a little more confident about soldering it. Does anyone know if the # of teeth on the speed sensor is going to be different? Any suggestions?

Get the sensor. Is the auto speed sensor the same as the manual? I've never worked on a auto tib.

Anyways if the sensor is the same go swap them. Thats the easiest/best solution.

I don't remember having to change the speed sensor.

The elantra speed sensor is different. You'd only run into this swapping in an elantra tranny.

^^

Yeah, that unfortunately is what I'm doing. I'd feel stupid going out and buying a sensor when I can do perfectly fine with what I already have on hand.

Looking at the tib's wiring diagram, it seems like I should be able to solder 1 to 1, 2 to 2, and 3 to 3 and it would work. That's assuming that the number of teeth is correct and the wires themselves aren't serving different purposes. Since it's an 04 that makes it kinda iffy...

If it was my car I'd try it. If the speedo scale is off (check with a GPS) then go ahead an replace it... Just keep the connector from the wiring so you can put it back on if needed.

? does an 01 tib have a VSS? My 00 elantra just had the speedo cable drive off the ring & pinion.

Oh lovely, one more extraneous thing to have fail when you need your car to work.

Sometimes I wish I could get a points ignition, magneto charging system, and mechanical injection, and just burn the whole wiring harness out. Oh well.
