Default tires + advice needed

i bought a set of continental 205/40/17's and mounted my polo cluster rims on them and the steering wheel wobbled horribly, a guy at strauss said it was the tires that were essentially too low profile and i would never be able to get a solid ride on them. i dont know if i buy that so i was wondering if any of you guys are running them and what my problem is.
secondly i came to a complete stand still with my tib. im not really sure what to do from here, i just spent a load of money on new rotors, tranny flush, new alternator and new battery. im noticing that im gonna need a new alignment as well. im getting fed up with all the money i have had to put in to keep in running right but im not sure what i want to do with modding it. i was even contemplating selling it and buying an 80s camaro as a beater that i can keep up with me as im going to be living on my college campus in the fall. i just need some ideas to keep me going. im willing to put about 500ish dollars into it for now. i havent done much but i figured id let you guys know what ive done so far. i painted my door handles black. i did the diy hood spacer mod. i have an aem cai. i tinted my tail lights (which led to me getting 5 tickets in one night) i had uninstalled ddm tuning hids, a pioneer headunit, and most recently polo clusters sitting on 17 inch tires sitting in my garage. im lost, someone give me some advice please. thanks

Those tires aren't too low profile to ride decent. If they don't you have another issue.

yup another issue

are those wheels lug centric or hub centric?
are they balanced properly?
if you switch to stock wheels, does it still shimmy?

Then your problem lies with the wheels somehow

If you don't know what to do with the car, here's an idea: do what the manufacturer intended: Drive it. Why do you have to change something?

If you have extra money, save it. If you have a year's worth of extra money, then start spending it again.
