synthetic is generally cleaner with less contaimenents..

I can tell you this about it: On my Old Excel, I ran Mobil One for the entire time it took to get to 150,000 miles. After that, I slacked off and went to regular oil.. within 5 thousand miles, the car was smoking badly from the valve stem seals... so take that as you see it.

wut do you generally use mad? Mobil 1 5w-30 or 10w-40?

I've been using Mobil 1 except on one occasion but I will be moving to the hot desert soon. I think i will be fine continuing my Mobil1 habits.

Mobil 1 10w30 is what I use.. it is the grade that Hyundai recommends and it is carried most everywhere.

Kind of off topic, but does anyone have an opinion on the Mobil One extended performance oil? It appears to allow for a yearly oil change (15,000mi) rather than every 3mo/3,000 mi.

Anyone???

If you want to put more expensive oil in your car go ahead and do it, but don't do it in favor of longer change periods, after all, no one he is going to bash you for putting good stuff on your car, most of us do it one way or the other, it's like spoiling your Tib a little tongue.gif

Mad, I think your experience is more like a two different events occuring by luck at the same time...

Zoned, don't go with too thin oil either, it's as bad as going with too thick oil when the time comes for the oil to perform in extreme conditions.

generally I will say this.. the day of the 3000 mile oil change is over. With our cleaner burning cars dumping less pollutants into the oil, cleaner, better reforumulated oil, and just plain better engines, it is not necessary to do the 3000 mile thing. I change mine around 5 to 6 with a top off inbetween (my car uses very little oil). This is doubly true for a synthetic.

If you doubt me, look at the new Euro cars with the computer monitored oil.. some of those cars can go 12,000 milesor more before the computer finally notices enough pollutants in the oil to warrent a change.

It also depends on how you drive. Stop and go city driving is much harder on the car and oil than highway or steady speed backroads.

i run mobil 1 15w-50/0w-40 or the royal purple, but jon is right they break down slower then real oil
