I took mine off when I put the scoop on, but because of the scoop, I had no problems with heat. I've heard that your paint can peel if there's too much heat, but I have yet to see any proof of that. You should be fine taking it off.

^^^ I sorta doubt that... Especially with a strut bar in there, it won't really fall down at all to smother anything. If the whole liner sort of melts down over the engine, maybe, but I don't see that material doing that, and I doubt it would be enough to help contain a fire. My tabs were pretty much shot when I took my liner off. They more or less exploded when I pulled them out...
Would be an interesting idea though.

I've heard that too. It's kinda questionable because of the fact that the fire can still get air from under the car.

I know this was kinda old but i had an idea thinking about this....
What about painting the underside of the hood with this?
http://www.duplicolor.com/products/engine.html
Would that not offer protection that the liner does?

No, that offers little protection if any. The real protection comes from the metal underneath the paint.
That's what I've used to paint everything in my engine bay. It even works well to repaint chipped stock black parts. You have to use engine enamel clear coat or you'll end up with oxidized paint that won't look right after a few months.
See, the hood is a large piece of metal with more surface area on the bottom to absorb heat then on the top to release it. Using that paint would make the surface look nice if any damage happened, but there is no need to use it straight up off the line. It's just to make stuff look pretty in a high heat environment. The stock paint didnt start peeling or getting eaten up on mine, so I don't see a need for it.

So we have no definate answers to if taking it off will ruin the paint. Sometimes factory stuff is there for a reason. Anyone please feel free to sound off.
