what kinda hp #'s are we looking at for a N/A Beta with all the goodies on it. like real high compression, cams, 9000rpm redline kinda stuff.
is 225-250whp feasible. just curious.

Contrary to flaming that has occurred in the past, there is a grand total of ZERO Beta engines making over 180 wheel horsepower on a dyno.
Those 180WHP ones are usually the result of a $10K+ buildup...

Actually, I've got a dyno for a N/A tibby with 4tb full drag race (no where near street drivable) that shows 235 WHP and 230something torque. Granted, this *dyno* is used in the companies advertising, so the *results* are somewhat circumspect. In my conversations with David of RPW, he seems to think that a Fully N/A tibby is capable of 200 N/A HP in semi-street driven form, using
0.1L displacement bump from larger pistions
0.1L displacement bump from stroker crank
4tb setup
equal length 4-1 headers
Haltec EK6 ECU and tuning
Custom N/A intake/exhaust cams (from RPW of course)
Valve port work, Valve seat 3 angle job
Lightweight flywheel
He listed some other mods that I can't remember at the moment too, but those are the biggies.
So, in theory, it's possible. Redline for the HLA equipped tibbies should not go over 7500. You MIGHT risk taking it to 8000 for just 1/4 mile runs, but be prepared to replace HLA's after every run, and to ruin a motor every 4th race. No way you could spin one to 9000.
For the BetaII, the long stroke is the killer, pistion speeds would just be too fast. Especially with the stroker crank, I'd still keep the limit to 7500, with only short forays into the 8000 RPM range, and only if you completley balanced/blueprinted everything....twice!
In reality, using USA *legal* mods that allow your car to be daily driven. I'd put your limit at about 160 to the wheels.
However, Decker's little Rev/Speed meeter also estimates HP. It claims he's pushing a best of 158 to the wheels. A dyno will soon tell us how accurate it really is.

The boys told me that they just tuned a Haltech NA tibby two weeks ago... standard single intake, big cams, increased compression ratio pistons, ported head... usual exhaust work... and made 187 hp at the wheels running a 50/50 mix of unleaded race and pump fuel... best numbers to date out of a non quadthrottle 2.0 Beta... not overbored. I will try to get a graph... the boys are out of town in Australia at the moment.

Not that I'm the resident expert of this board, but if I remember correctly, the Hyundai engineers don't design their engines for high revs. But, for some reason, they design their beta engines strong enough to handle boost. Toss out the pistons and rods and get some aftermarket equipment, and you are seeing 300+ and beyond easy. I think Cheuk made it real clear a long time ago, that the only good thing to do to a beta engine is to Turbo it. Don't try to make it a high revver like a S2000. Like it's been suggested numerous times before, instead of trying to be like something, just go to the source and buy it. i.e. *I want to put an Eclipse engine in my Tiburon*. Instead of that, just buy the Eclipse and save yourself the trouble. I hope this kind of helps. wink
