See this is the thing, the autos DONT shift faster than a 5speed, much much slower in fact, and are incapable of launching anywhere near as well as a stick.
The "1/4 mile monsters" use BUILT automatics with high stall torque converters and are made to shift real real fast.
Stock automatic transmissions, esspecially the beta's, are made for economy and a smooth ride.
If you dont believe me, look at the quarter mile times between sticks and autos. The RD: stock stick gets as low as 16.0, stock auto will get you low 17's if your lucky

^ id have to agree with it being a slower shift. Ive never driven a stick Tib, ive got an auto.
Its actually not bad if you manual shift it thru 1st and 2nd, there is a point where it will just clunk into gear instead of trying to shift nicely. From there out its fine in 3rd and 4th with the OD on. If you just leave it in drive tho, even if you punch it, it will lag like a fat man in a foot race from 1st to 2nd. Best launch rpms it seems to allow you to do is around 2500rpm with your foot on the brake.

It's the same reason it's always been, and if you look for other threads on this same subject, the answers are the same.
OEM Auto = Less power than OEM 5 Speed.
Not just less power, but LESS control over that power.
Yeah, you can build a auto up, but why? I'd rather have the skill of shifting added to the mix.

redz is right auto = uses more power. it's also 60lbs heavier. air velocity throughout is not as thorough as stick therefore making it less economic. the stick utilizes the most power in the most efficient way.
i'd have to say the auto was easy because you wouldn't have to pay attention to shifting and you would be only worried about the what's ahead than your driving.

In response to that HKC id say that with an auto your barely driving so you can get easily sidetracked with non driving activities.
Stick keeps you focused on driving
