Cleaning Corrosion
#1
i've posted a few times about my speedo and how it stopped working. the reason why (i'm hoping this is the only reason), is that one of the pins on the sensor corroded off. i replaced the sensor and it worked for two days, then stopped again.
one thing i'm thinking is that the pin that corroded away is all in the harness plug (in the form of powder/debris) for the speedo, so there's a really bad connection. is there any sort of solvent i can dip the harness plug in that would clean it and not hurt it?

A mixture of baking soda and water mang. That should clean it out. I'd personally just replace the sensor and see if the wiring corroded back under the plastic sheathing at all.

well, i did replace the sensor. and it worked for two days, then quit again. for the baking soda - water mixture, how long should i let the plug sit in the mixture? do i need to rinse it before i let it dry?

i dont know about rinsing it...water can leave behind minerals that can conduct electricity.
you might actually wanna buy some battery terminal cleaner from an advanced auto or something. spray that stuff all over the terminals and scrub with a little wirebrush. should work.

the problem is i can't clean it with a wirebrush. if there is corrosion, it's inside the plug, not on the pins. i think the pin from the old speedo sensor corroded off in the plug and is preventing the new sensor from making contact.

I've seen two kinda of "Contact Cleaner;" one has water in it and one does not. If you purchase one without it takes about 10-15 seconds to dry out. Be careful, it can make plastics looks "different," like salt on paint ot white... glue laugh.gif on a dress. I use it all the time at work and it works wonders. PLUS it's really fun for creating fires with the high levels of various alcohols and butanes... ninja.gif
