Sup Gurus,

My recently purchased 98 Tiburon has 99K miles on it. A tune up was done in Febuary but the owner didnt know what was changed.

I plan to get an oil change done this weekend. Is Mobil 1 Synthetic the best choice? Is there a better oil for Tibs? What about filters?

I dont have the $$ for an overhaul, but wouldnt mind adding something to the fuel. What have you used that you think works?

Depending on what oil was used before, you cannot switch to Synthetic right away, and I would not recommend switch from organic to synthetic at 100k mi.

Change fuel and air filters, better yet, get a CAI.

And clean your injectors by pros at some shop.

That B12 stuff works great. I remember I used to buy the expensive synthetic cleaners and Redz recommend that I try using the B12 cleaner instead. I've been using B12 ever since smile.gif .

I have used the "restore" stuff on occasion (B12 is hard to find around here). I recently found that it is great for getting stains out of an fabric (if you can stand the smell) when I had a bottle pop it's cap in the heat and leak all over my back seat. There was a stain there that had resisted all forms of cleaning.. it is gone now and thankfully so is the smell from the fuel injector cleaner.

I don't think that restore stuff really works..

Read the directions on the back of the B12 bottle, you can put some in the crank too right before you change the oil. I think it says with the engine cool, add 8oz's and let the car idle for 5 minutes, then immediately drain and change the oil and the filter.

If you already have 100k, and the car has been using regular non-synthetic oil the whole time, you should probably not switch to synthetic now.

As far as giving the car a tune-up, I would do the following things:
B12 chemtool in the gas (Add it when the tank is LOW, then go fill it up)
B12 chemtool in the oil (directions above)
Change oil (non-synthetic oil) + filter (get a K&N oil filter)
Change air filter (you will actually feel a HP gain if you get a K&N filter, but they're like $30, otherwise just get a generic one for like $10-15)
Change transmission fluid + filter (get Redline fluid if you have a manual transmission)
New spark plugs (get NGK brand)
New spark plug wires if you can afford it (also NGK)
Do the resonator removal in the DIY section (free)

and you have a fully tuned-up tibby.


Have a friend who knows about cars or your dad or someone help you do all of the things listed above yourself, otherwise a mechanic may rip you off .. just my opinion based on experience.
Off-topic but before you go out and try to buy anything for your car, always SEARCH this site for topics on it, a LOT of stuff on ebay are rip offs and generic stuff that you don't want. If you can't find a topic by searching this site, post a new one and we'll answer you. A good rule of thumb is to remember that you get what you pay for, if it's cheaply priced, it's cheaply made .. and you don't want ANYTHING cheap on your car. I learned that the hard way, after buying eBay crap for a few months and wasting a lot of money, I finally realized that you need to just spend the extra $20 and do it RIGHT.

There is no need to use expensive K&N oil filter. Regular filters work just as well.
NGK wires actually are more resistant than stock, so it's another no no!

I had my oil changed. I stuck with mineral Exon oil for now. Added that B12 stuff. Cant tell a difference at all. Ran the car at idle for 5 minutes (Wasnt cool though)

Added the rest to the fuel as well. Hopefully, it's doing something good.

Next comes the intake and the spark plugs/wires. Are Magnecors any good?

Any good place to get these parts?
