Every post on this site says that you must have one 02 sensor behind a cat converter. I was wondering why because I will be putting a turbo kit on very soon and if i have to put one behind the cat it will complicate matters.

I would like to say that I currently have a 4-1 header and only one cat converter. Both o2 sensors are in front of the cat converter and I never got a cel and everything has been running great for nearly 7500 miles.

So again, can somebody explain exactly why the o2 sensor has to go behind the cat?

because you will get a CEL. lol

I don't know about your car, but mine throws a CEL when you put both O2 sensors before the CAT.

CAT must be in between the two O2 sensors to read the difference or something.

It doesn't matter if you have a turbo setup or not. It has to be that way!

i have no cats, and bought a o2 simulator, at first it didnt work, or i thought, cause i was throwing both o2 codes, but when i swapped my ecu, i havent had a code come up in about 4 months.

in other words, just spend the 4 bux on a simulator, then u wont have to worry about relocating anything or a CEL

How about THIS:

Install your turbo.
Put one sensor BEFORE your cat.
Put one sensor AFTER your cat.

How does it complicate anything?

OMG Noesss... I can install a turbo but I can't extend wires for an o2 sensor a few feet and install a fitting into the exhaust... both of which are things I must know how to do to install a turbo in the first place.

^^^ All three above this

First off, why get mad? I just asked a question.

Redz- It is not currently set up to have an o2 before and after.

Hamhead and tanc- It is more than just extending wires. If one does indeed have to go after the cat I would have to take my car into a weld shop and have bungs welded into the existing exhaust and the new dp (because I don't have a welder at my house). To drive to a shop I would need to have a car capable of being driven (tuned). I can't tune to well without o2 sensors from what I gather.

tanc- i like clean air to...the whole point of this post was to find out why an o2 sensor has to go behind the cat.

02 sensor goes behind the cat so the ecu reads the condition of it.

Why don't you take your cat, take a taxi to a exhaust shop, ask them to weld in an 02 bung.

^^^ Good point... i forgot that this cat was bolted with a flange. My last one was just welded on for some reason.

You can make the drive to an exhaust shop without the o2 sensors in.

If you can't weld, how do you intend to put the oil return for your turbo?
