I know its all the same pretty much, but in terms of reliability and mechanical problems, do you think Hyundai is worst or Kia?

I don't think either are bad.

With Hyundai, it seems to usually be one thing that gets them. For the Tiburon beta, it was a crappy automatic transmission matched to it that really ate into the warranty reserves. For the Genesis Coupe, we're not seeing hardly any problems reported, except for a weak 5th gear in the M/T.

Now, when you consider other companies are manufacturing and supplying these transmissions, should that reflect the "quality" of Hyundai? I think not. Just the unfortunate result of a gamble Hyundai made on who should supply the transmission.

Hyundai was ranked 7th in 2010 on JD Power's Initial Quality survey with 102 problems per 100 vehicles.

Kia was ranked 27th, with 126 problems per 100 vehicles.

Hyundai was 4 places above industry average, Kia was 16 below.

So, as mechanically similar as the models are, as recently as 2010 Hyundai > KIA.
