So Monday morning i changed my oil before going out of town to go on a tour of Wyotech. When i finally got down there, after 5 miles of driving i realized there was a very loud ticking noise coming from the valve train. Before i used 10w-40 royal purple, and switched to 10w-30 royal purple. Usually when i start my car the noise is there, but if i sit there and rev the engine between 1200-3500, the sound seems to go away until i turn the car off again. If anyone has any idea what may be causing this noise let me know. Would changing from 10w-40 to 10w-30 really cause valve train noise?

first our you using a Hyundai oil filter...there is a service thing out saying that any other oil filter will strive the lifters and get the ticking noise

so then tomorrow i should probably stop by the dealer and pick up a hyundai oil filter instead of the FRAM?

I've been using a k&n for a few years now with no problems, get them at napa

The only time i had lifter noise, i had a fram filter on.

And myron.... i lose about 5 mins each day cause i have to double/triple/quadruple take your avatar, your costing me money dammit!

So the problem with cheap oil filters is that they can't flow enough oil to the head? I was about to do an oil change and use a fram filter but I may reconsider now...

Hyunshark, you chose the worst possible brand (FRAM) to use. I hope you take the occasion to switch to ONLY OEM or high-quality aftermarket filters from now on. I have used the Purolator Pure One for quite some time, if I don't get an OEM one. Also the K&N is known to not cause the ticking.

By the way, it would be more kind to your engine, if you would just let it sit there idling for a minute at a cold start, instead of revving the gas. The ticking is your cam lobes/HLAs/valve stem tips smashing into each other from too far away. Doing it harder (faster) is not so good for the metal bits. . . probably it won't hurt anything for a few seconds BUT

Hyundai warns that you should keep engine speed under 3000RPM while it is ticking, and if it ticks longer than 15 minutes, you have a problem with oiling to the cylinder head (likely caused by a chumpy oil filter) or possibly failed HLAs.

well, im going to say its the shitty fram oil filter because there was no ticking prior to the change. Im going to go down and get a K&N today, and will drain the oil and do the whole process again, except with the K&N. Ill let you guys know if the ticking goes away... hopefully it does haha.

Found this on ebay. 5x OEM oil filters & drain plug washers for $30 shipped. I think it's time for me to stock up biggrin.gif

Don't drain all the oil, just half-fill the new filter and slap it on there.
