Well, I'm actually going to wire mine up to keep all of the stock gauge functions, and just remove the spark and fuel job from the ECU.

The overdrive on the tranny will still work. It's based off the button, and that is wired straight to the TCM. (tranny control module).
The clock will still work, that's just basic 12V clock.
The Air bags are controled by their own system and control module, so they will still deploy.
Stand alone systems just take over fuel and spark from the ECU. They don't replace "all" ECU function.

you cant split the feed from the crank reluctor sensor.
alot of the auto control requires rpm, you might
need to manufacture a second crank trigger for your new
ecu.
You also lose ALL your OBD2 based functions.
your dual O2 setup, your evap controls etc.
you can have your a/c and fans controlled by the
new ecu.
You can keep them IF you can keep the stock ecu thinking
its running the car, which at minimum requires a crank signal.
i also doubt it will work without a CEL.
the gauges arent affected, except for the tacho.
the coolant gauge has a seperate sender, you
dont touch the fuel sender, and the speedo signal
comes straight from the tranny.
you're best of ripping the old sucker out and doing it proper.

The term "piggy back" when referring to a computer on your car generally means that your device is altering the original ECU output.
A standalone doesn't alter jack, it takes over and kicks the stock ECU to the curb wink What he is referring to is making the stock computer THINK it's still running the show, even though almost none of it's output is actually going to be used.
