Default How Do You Slow Down?

Just curious as to what everyone's driving techniques are. How do you slow down (not stop entirely) in your car? smile.gif

Hi !, ....just to put my 2 pence (cents) worth in here......
Mike Hawthorn, the last , great, English amateur F1 jock famously said......
"When driving on normal public roads, except in emergencies, the gears alone should be used to slow the vehicle -- the brakes are for bringing the vehicle to a final halt!".
This is a principle I have always tried to adhere to (when possible) with the result that..........
A : My brake pads seem to last forever.
B : I have never experienced brake-fade.
C : My alloys are always immaculate & take no longer to clean than the wings!.

However, perhaps it`s important to remember that Mike was killed in an accident whilst racing a Jaguar against another motorist on a public road!!.

Lets say I'm in fourth, I'll down shift to second, hold the clutch in, use the brakes then let out the clutch when my speed is low enough for second gear. It just depends on how fast I was travelling before I had to slow down, how fast I had to slow down/stop, and other driving conditions come into effect.

if u talk to any one who knows alot about cars they will tell u that downshifting to slow down is stupid, why are u going to use your clutch when u have brakes? think of it this way, out of the twp things, what is easier and cheaper to change when they run out? the brakes obviousely. so why not use them. this topic came up in my automotive class in high school and i wish i remember what the teacher said exactly, but i know he said that it was not good to downshift to brake. im not making fun of any one for doing it cause i myself used to do it till i learned that it was not right. plus it just makes sence that u should use ure brake instead of your clutch cause brakes are alot cheaper to replace.
