hooking a laptop to your car computer?
Ok, I have seen this done on a few Hondas on TV.
somehow they can boost the HP or something by changing settings in the computer in the car using a laptop and some program.
does anyone know anything about this, or how it works or is done?
Thanks,

I've got one of these (I'm sure you guess as much).
They are about $120 from http://www.obd-2.com/
It comes with everything you need except a laptop. It is NICE, but not KILLER.
It allows you to read the codes that trigger Check Engine Lights, and also allows you to reset the CEL.
It records the following data...
System Status (open loop or closed loop)
Engine Load in %
ECT (Engine Coolant Tempature) in Degrees F.
Short Term Fuel Trim1 in %
Long Term Fuel Trim1 in %
Engine RPM
MPH (Vehicle Speed)
Spark Advance/retard in degrees
IAT (Intake Air Tempature) in degrees F (helps in building a CAI and finding benefits of heat wraping)
MAF in Pounds of air per Minute
Throttle Position Sensor (how far your foot is to the floor)
O2 Sensor #1 (voltage and % oxygen)
02 Snesor #2 (voltage and % oxygen)
and If your ECU is equiped with CARB crap. (mine is)
The more items you select from that list...the slower it updates. So if you select ALL DATA, each item only gets updated every 2 seconds. If you only select 1 data item, it updates 3 times a second....It is NOT determined by processor speed of the laptop, but by the limitations of the cable and the ECU in the car itself.
You can "graph" the results to see values go up and down over the course of a drive.
And you can have a "dash" display, that you can customize to any of the above items...2 large gauges and 4 smaller ones. (they display on your laptop screen).
O2 Sensor Screen
For someone who is going to be messing with their car...it is a MUST. If nothing else...for being able to give you the CEL error codes and allowing you to shut that bloody bastard off!
CEL Error Screen
It WILL NOT..
turn off the AIR BAG light
remove the speed limiter
make your car perform any better
It WILL allow you to see exactly what your ECU thinks your engine is doing, giving you the information you need to track down a problem, improve upon a design/modification.
It also allows for testing the fuel system for Evap leak (gas cap not on right)
It also will suposedly give you 0-60 times and 1/4 mile times...however...I have never been able to get this feature to work.
The sofware comes with next to NO documentation, and NO help files. It really is sort of a "learn as you go" kind of thing.
If anyone buys one, I will help as I can.
The software IS what allowed me to design the 'Random Special' CAI that flowed the most air, and the coldest air. That way I had confidence when it came Dyno time. Some of you out there with homemade CAI's...You can compare your numbers to mine to see how yours performs...and save yourself the dyno trip!

If you tell the guy that you have a Hyundai, and the year/model, he will send you everything you need.
The Air bag light comes on if you have installed aftermarket gauges without disconnecting the negative battery lead, or if there is an air bag problem.
If you have the stock gauges...and the light is on...you might want to have the dealer look at it.

I did take out my factory gauges when i installed my alarm. I did not disconnect my battery when i did so. So how do i get the light to go off it is really annoying. I just tried disconnecting my negative battery terminal but the light still came back on. Maybe i didn't leave unhooked long enough???

About a year or so ago some of the guys on fxtreme got together and did a group buy on these and everyone saved a few dollars...I am interested in getting one of these now, and if we can get enough people together to do a group buy, we could all save some money...who has the money that would be interested in doing this?
Keep in mind you have to have access to a laptop in order to be able to use this.
