H..E..L..P Please ( Random?)
Hi Guy's,
A while ago I posted asking if anyone had any idea why I was having a noise from the rear of the car when going over rough ground ( Cobbled street etc. ). I have had the car to the dealer 4 times so far and the brakes have been stripped back 3 times to which no fault could be found!!
What happnes is when I go down a rough road surface i hear a metal on metal clanging sound but the moment i step on the brakes ( Even very lightly! ) the sound stops?
I have been under the rear of the car and looked at the brakes for anything loose but can find nothing.
I need help!! This is driving me mad!!
Oh and it is only on surfaces that are uneaven as when i go over speed bumps i get no noise!!
So come on guy's and girls! lets see if you can help me out.
Cheers
Chris

Thanks Zorro,
I will have a look after lunch wink.gif
If it is what can i do to sort it.
when i bought the car 7 months ago it did not do this, And i have even put the factory springs back on to see if that was the problem but Nope it still does it...SO that was a waste of £100 sad.gif
I do have 17" alloy's on and was wondering if it coule be the rear suspension going!?
What do you think!

Guess what, I am having the exact same problem since last year. I put my head in the rear wheel well more than I wash my car. Still found nothing. Last time I was painting my calipers and I inspected the dust plate and found nothing. But one thing I am still trying to find out is, the brake pad might be hitting the disc. First I have aftermarket pads; second, my shims are missing. There are some shiny metal clips on the pads and I think they might be loose or something. Well, need to find that out next. If you are going to the dealer again, ask them about this. See if they can tighten the clip. Especially the inside one.

Chris/Etep-
What happens if you slowly pull up on the e-brake handle while going over a rough road? Does the sound still go away? If so...check the parking brake cable. It may be lose/clanking on something.
It also try the brake shim idea that Etep was talking about...but I'm assuming the dealer would have noticed/fixed that.
Lastly...take the rear wheel off. Lightly tap things and see if you can find anything that is loose or wobbly. If not...try to reproduce the SOUND. Then you at least know where to look.
Your last resort is to "powder" everything back there(Not the brake pads, rotors or strut shaft) with blue carpenters chalk...then drive over the cobbled streets...then look to see where the blue chalk has been removed. You now know where something is banging. If the blue chalk is undistrubed...then you know it must be the brake pads.
My rear brakes need adjustment. The rear pads "drag" over the rotors when I rotate the rear wheels. For some reason, they are not backing off the rear rotors enough...Yours maybe the opposite problem. the pads are not adjusting themseves back in as they were down, causing them to "chatter" when you go over bumps...

I have a banging sound as well. I just got back from the dealership and the tech sat in the back of the car and listened. They think it is the strut and strut brace. They have got the parts and are doing the work on Monday. I will update you guys on the outcome when I get the car back.

I had the exact same problem, noise over bumps but when I applied the brakes, nothing. It was my front brakes, the part that bolts on behind the rotor and then the caliper bolts to it. It was my dumb fault, I was in a rush to get my calipers back on after painting (was getting dark out and I had to go to work the next morning) and I didn't tighten them all the way. any way the dealer should have caught this if it was your problem.

Well I have had the problem rectified by the garage!?
I went back to them and asked to speak to the manager. The guy was very helpfull and almost instantly told me the problem. He looked up the job cards that shows work done to the car and it was there fault i had the clanging from the rear. They had replaced the discs and pads all round before i picked up the car and thay had put in the WRONG pads in the rear. They tried to cut costs by putting in some Sh%tty pads that were loose.
Never mind sorted now and car is now rattle free.
Think I will put in the Grean stuff pads all round next week now though wink.gif
