GAS MILAGE
i drive a 1999 elantra, it has the 2.0liter engine in it. i am averaging around 18 miles per gallon, i recently got 170 miles to ten gallons of gas. that was with the AC. is this the write numbers?? do you think something might be wrong with the engine? does anyone else see these kind of numbers. i would think i would get better gas milage then a V-6 but i dont. help me out with any opinions you guys might have. thanks for your time!

Something is horribly wrong with your engine.
With a 1999, it should be under warranty. Take it in and complain to them about the mileage. The worst I have ever gotten is 20 MPH (prior to the turbocharger). My average was around 25 with very aggressive city driving, and 32 MPG top ever best MPG for a long freeway cruise.

With my crazy driving, I get 28 with the A/C on and 30 normally. I have an intake and some TB and manifold work (which do help), but before that it was at 25 at the lowest ever (and like I said, with crazy, high-rev driving).
definitely have it looked at. If you are so inclined, check your plugs for scorching/fouling and your coil packs for arcing (whatever the cause it should be under warranty).

okay cool thanks for all the help, ive always thought that 17mpg was impossible for a 4 cylinder to get. keep in mind though, i just turned 17, and i do drive my car hard, but would it still be possilbe to get that horrible of milage?? or definatly have it checked out??

Well wait, make sure FIRST that you're figuring it correctly. I know a person locally that swore up and down his 1998 Saturn got like 44 miles to the gallon, until I sat him down and showed him how to correctly figure mileage.
Before you start quoting mileage, you want to do the following:
When the car is OUT of gas, drive to the gas station and fill up. Before you even start the car after filling up the tank, reset your trip odometer (the little baby odometer that has four digits underneath your "real" odometer)
Drive like your normal self until the car is empty again.
Go back to your favorite gas station, and fill the car up completely again. You now have exactly how much fuel you burned and how many miles were traveled on that fuel. Thus, you can ACCURATELY figure gas mileage.
13.1 gallons you put in the tank to fill it up.
338.6 miles on the trip odometer
338.6 miles DIVIDED BY 13.1 gallons = 25.84 miles per gallon.
This is a fairly low number, typically my car will get around 27.5 in the city (it's been going down recently, I think because my alternator is going out and is dragging against the belts) and around 32 on the highway.
You cannot go to the dealer and say "my mileage is ****" without some numbers to back it up. If you go into the dealer and give them exact numbers from your trip odometer, it's much easier for them to realize there really is a problem.
It is a very good idea to track your gas mileage constantly. I have a book with every fillup on the car since I've bought it, along with total miles, date, and miles per gallon. Thus, you can tell what your car does "normally" (ie mine likes to hang at around 28 usually) and what it does when it's not feeling good (I once got a 34 in the city while the car was running like crap -- turned out to be a vacuum leak making the car run really lean)

Honestly I though my Tiburon's gas efficiency seemed less than I thought it would be. Unfortunetly, I am from the North so I use metric and I am not sure of the conversion. But I can snag about 420-440 km per 50 litre tank. Is this normal?

thanks far all the help Red, i filled my tank up today, about 10 gallons of gas to about 225 miles. still that was trying to get good gas milage. i usually fill my tank u about every other day, or like 2 or 3 times a week, i fell like im driving a dodge viper. speaking of, my boss has one, he let me take it out for my birthday. omg its so freaking fast, omg, i wish someone could make a tib or elantra like that, that would be nice. vipers suck through gas, i filled it up, then by the time i got it home it home(20 mile trip) it was at about 3/4 tank. kinda sick. but it is the coolest car.
