Is Ford reinventing the engine?
How is this any different from our cars?

If it were something like this, i'd be impressed

Omg!!! Ford made a Beta engine with a timing chain instead of a belt/chain and it has an oil sensor in the pan.

Actually, that animation is pretty cool.
But for reals, I got distracted while writing this... what's with the first video? Is there anything innovative?

first video just looks like a standard conventional direct injection engine to me. i don't see anything different at all.
and this whole ecoboost crap is just their name for direct injection.

um ecoboost is not their name for direct injection
its called ecoboost....cuz its BOOSTED lol
its innovative cuz and correct me if im wrong, ford was the first to mass produce it, releasing the motor in 2009, where as our engine wasnt released until 2011
EDIT: i forgot all about the ecotec motors

of course but the whole eco aspect of the direct injection is associated with the name. it's just not really all that revolutionary. that animation is just a standard engine. i would not call it a reinvention.
their latest gearbox design is revolutionary. too lazy to search right now bot the gears are aligned vertically.

Here's the deal with EcoBoost... Yes, they have direct injection. The name comes from the fact that they use smaller displacement motors with turbocharging to replace larger displacement motors. Ford's eventual goal is to replace all of their NA V6's with turbo 4's and the V8's with turbo 6's.

Hey Faith and as far as ECOTEC, Not EcoBOOST goes, the EcoTEc came out early 2000's and were in Ponti-snaks. My sister for her first car was bought a 2002 GrandAm with a 2.0l EcoTec.

Ecoboost is the same technology in the Sonata 2.0t, but Ford has a catchy name for it. I don't even understand the "reinventing the engine" reference.

Small 4 cylinder turbo cars are Saab, Porsche, and other premium car brands domain. saab was one of the first to use 4 cylinder turbo cars in their production cars. The saab 900 and saab 9000 for example. GM bought Saab took their engines and turbos and put them in Pontiacs, Saturns and Chevy after making them cheaper and less reliable in typical GM fashion! Saab even marketed themselves as the eco friendly car company since they where using engines and turbos that got better gas mileage while still maintaining performance their customers expected. As for Ford recent engine tech has them working on technology that adjust the combustion chamber based on energy demands. IE Shrinking the chamber size to increase efficency under a light load and increasing chamber size when under heavy load. (no replacement for displacement). This techonology will take an 8 cylinder engine and shrink it's energy consumption to that of a 440cc 2 cylinder. Or allow a small block to have as much power as a big block v8 when needed. I believe they are testing this in combination with turbo chargers and variable valve timing. Pretty neat stuff.
However, I still have my hopes of someday owning a production RX7/RX8 with a Hydrogen powered rotary engine (which Mazda is testing but not for the general public).
