Default Why would anyone buy e85?

I was filling up last night, and the gas station I was at had E85, along with the other three regulars. E85 was $2.79, regular 87 was $2.81, and premium (what I bought) was $3.09 I think.

So, E85 I believe gives you around 15% less mileage than regular gas, right? And if it only costs $.02 less per gallon, why in the world would anyone buy it? Am I missing something?

Depends on location too. I usually see e85 about 25¢ less but I've heard figures up to half as much as reg.

But yeah, cheap race gas too.

The corn used to make e85 is not a consumer grade corn, so no one is eating it anyway. The hype about it affecting corn prices is nothing more than that, hype. My good friend and roommate is learning all about this in a new position he is starting in February.

It's not hype. The corn goes to feed livestock currently, which we do eat. 1lb of beef takes 10lbs of corn to feed.

annndd if e85 caught on like they wanted? Maybe once they get better with making it out of stuff we don't eat at all it would be more viable, but if we really got into that as a fuel we would be burning food worthy stuff.

Has that stuff even moved into the energy positive realm yet? The last time I checked the amount of equipment it takes to make and move it still uses more than it makes.
