Default Where to go to get a cat removed?

Ive called a few places in houston, & they either say definately not, or that they would have to call & find out if its legal. I know some of you have a cat removed, & as far as i know, my 2k1 tib has 2 cats. i would like to removed the back cat & just replace it with a str8 pipe. Should i try to gut it myself, or is there anywhere that u guys would know of that would remove my cat??

your going to have to do it yourself. removing the cat is illegal and un-ethical.
it is even illegal to replace it with a hi-flow unless there is somethign wrong with the one you have now.

I think there are some laws that say it's legal to replace the cat after so many miles...like 50,000 miles i think. Before so will not be legal.

It is illegal to remove a funtional cat at any time or mileage as long as it is in functioning order. Warranty on a cat by Federal law is 8yrs/80K miles. Replacing a cat usually requires the work to be done by an EPA licensed exhaust shop. Cause for the swap, milage, date, mechanic, shop, etc. all must be filled out on a form to be submitted to the Feds.

Removing a cat will not yeild you the HP you think it will. The actual results on a small 4-banger are insignificant and barely noticeable. If you insist on doing it, either do it yourself, or find some redneck exhaust shop out in podunk nowhere to do it. Your national chain stores or the more reputable establishments in town aren't going to put their butts on the line for you.

So all these steps must be met when you put on some headers? Since the cat will have to be removed/replaced?

Not true. It's a federal law under the jurisdiction of the EPA.

I went to a Merlin Muffler shop and they took it out for me. I paid the guys a 100 bux since I was having my exhaust work on. I had the second cat taken out. I left the federal cat on near the manifold. Ill have it taken out when I put my headers and putting a random tech. cat in replace of.
