Default Running Lean...

Just installed my Autometer Phantom gauge. When I start the car..it slow makes it way from right to left. Then at an idle is on the lean side. (i'll have a video tomorrow) but if you break the gauge into 1/3's...i'll be @ normal (lean) at an idle at the 1/3 rd mark. So say 10 o'clock. Is this "normal" for a 2000 Tiburon with my mods (in signature) ? Do I need to "correct" it? As I've heard that stock we come running rich.

Thanks

Wait till the car warms up. O2 sensor readings are worthless untill it reaches operating temp.

Ok, so a 1/2 hour trip into work today: meter still ended up reading say 10 o'clock ish. And last night (once warmed up) I "punched it" and it went all the way to the left (Lean side) and went into the RED. With my mods listed...where "should" it be reading? Can i damage my engine if I run too lean? Other than a S-AFC...can I adjust it to run more "mid-point ish" ?

Thanks

Currently I dont have a S-AFC. But that will be my next item purchased. (besides an alarm this weekend..hopefully)

Is there any thing I can do in the mean time to protect my engine?

You sure you got the SAFC programmed right?

Make sure the throttle mark is rising, and that it says 4cyc, and dont modify the SAFC with the engine running, modify it with the acessory key on.

I DO NOT HAVE A Apex-i S-AFC

But plan on getting one...So for now...how can I "correcT" this? Is there any way? If I really get on it..I can make the mark go into the Lean area...which is RED.

Okay...at idle 10 o'clock is nothing to worry about at idle. If the gauge goes all the way LEFT at WOT, then yes, that COULD BE bad.

The problem I have seen with most A/F gauges, is that they do not change fast enough, or often enough compared to the O2 sensor readings I get using my OBD-ii software. I have seen them swing from rich to lean at normal freeway cruising, but they do it very slowly...a left to right transition takes 2-3 seconds, whereas the OBD-ii software shows a 0.1 to 0.9 V trasition about 6 times a second. So, it is possible that your A/F gauge is just not refreshing fast enough, and is actually only reading the "low" voltage pulse, not the "high" voltage pulse that happens several times a second, and thusly is returning a "lean" signal.

I would reccomend you get the OBD-ii software and cable and double check your install of your A/F gauge, or at least it's accuracy.

You can download it free from www.obd-2.com . It doesn't have the telepathic interface working yet though, so it won't do you much good without the cables. tongue.gif

P.S.: You checked the tuning on your S-AFC? wink
