After reading through that write up I think you are right on for the 8mm ID piping. You may want to measure the gap that this goes into on the car so that you dont get piping that has too big of an OD.

On my transmission, I got the little plastic piece that fits almost perfectly that peg, so I don't need to make that modification. I guess Hyundai added that little piece somewhere in 2000... ?

Maybe Hyundai has this as a replacement part. Then it may save us a trip to Home Depot or Home Hardware.

Oh yeah, and 2UNIQ, please don't quote the post above yours. Use the ADD REPLY button instead of the "REPLY button.

No. Mine has the plastic piece, and it's a 96. All I need to do is put the washer in to fill the gap (and I will do it 1 day, when I've got nothing else to do).

I don't have any pics, but the plastic piece goes onto the pin and fits into the groove in the gear linkage (It does the same thing as putting the pipe on the pin). You should be able to get them from your dealer.
I have some play in the shifter (but not much) and 2nd gear gives some trouble sometimes but I think that's just the Hyundai box.
Of course I have the OZ-Shift short shifter, and as everyone knows, it's the best.
