Default Red / Random 14.9 NA

I remember reading awhile back that red got his Tiburon into the high 14's with alot of NA mods. I cant remember what the list is, can you refresh me? Also how far off am I from getting there?
My goal is 14.9 or lower. How far off am I?
I got:

2001 Tib SE
AOS CAI (w/tweaking its drawing true cold air)
CUSTOM 2 1/4 Catback with glasspack.(should put some flanged straight pipe where the 2nd cat is?)
AOS pulley (Hey random hurry get the UR kit on smile.gif )
58 mm TB from ElantraZone
IM soon to be ported 58 mm collector port (How deep should I go on the runners? A machinest is doing it for me)
I just ordered the Elantra GT cam.

I havn't ordered headers yet, I dont know wether to get the 4-2-1 (Proven 7WHP) or 4-1 ???... I dont know if the 4-1 are as good are produce more top end as people say the do.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. smile.gif

I pulled a single 14.9x and a handful of 15.0x and 15.1x times at Wichita International Speedway in Wichita KS a year or two ago. At that time, I had:

1997 Rev "A" Tiburon FX 5-spd
MHP cold air intake
HVE throttle body
Ported intake manifold
Elantra 1.8L Cam
Ported/polished cylinder head w/3-angle valve job
HVE 4-1 header
Freeflow 2.5" cat
Custom 2.5" exhaust w/glasspack
Powerchip ECU
APEXi S-AFC
RPW 4-puck cerametallic clutch

At the time I was running on 15 inch wheels, but I can't remember what tires as I borrowed them from a friend of my brother's. I don't remember launch speed either, I want to say about 4000-4500 RPM's or thereabouts.

Ahh great thats what I was looking for, thanks. Did you like your HVE headers?

Another quick one, is it possible to tune your engine using the S-AFC and the OBDii scanner, monitoring the oxygen sensors... etc. I have access to the scanner but just curious if it really is neccessary to dyno-tune if you get the S-AFC.

EDIT: Use the Edit feature, do NOT DOUBLE POST

The stock o2 sensors are not sensative enough to "tune" a S-AFC. For it to be done properly (show a performance gain), you must dyno Tune it.

Thanks for your help Random,

One last one, when your dyno tuning, the car will not be running at max HP when its running rich or lean correct? Well on the S-AFC each knob controls the fuel/air mixture at a certain RPM. When looking at the dyno, how do you know if the engine is producing max HP at that particular RPM. Is there another sensor you must install, or use a particular type of dyno?
Thanks,
-Steve

Nearly all (good) dyno shops have a wideband lambda (o2) sensor that they will stick in the tailpipe. This reads the air/fuel mixture directly, and this is what you tune against.

The BETA engine likes to run around 13.5:1 air/fuel ratio. So if you're tuning on the dyno, aim in that general direction and you'll make the most power.

Ok I just bid on a Gen 1 S-AFC, for my 2001 Tiburon, umm, its not listed in the compatible cars section on APEXi, and it says its for MAP vehicles but mine is a MAF. Is this a problem?
Red, Random?

the gen 1 should work on the 2001 tib. It won't be able to be properly tuned since you can't to WOT tuning.
