Chroming it holds heat awfully well, I don't have mine anymore, Edwin aka ELTIBURON has it now, and is super happy with it, it's incredible how something so small in change can make a difference in your engine bay.
you can sorta make it out here:

That plate looks hot! (pardon the pun, couldn't help it) I dig the black look.
What kind of paint, how many coats, and most importantly, how do you take it off? Is it a day job? How long? I think i'd like to do that too.

Just use high temp engine paint. Make sure you clean the old hot plate when cold, and if you can "scuff" it some with 600 grit sandpaper.
I used 5 coats on mine and painted it blue before the turbo. I think Yamaneko has it now.
When I get home, I'll see if I can dig up some photos.

I used exactly that, high temp low gloss engine block paint. I used very fine sandpaper that I had laying around and there's only 3 bolts holding the plate on (12mm?). I had to spray some penetrating oil onto them and then warm up the engine so they would be easier to take off. Four *very* thin coats because I didn't want any runs.
I think I'll paint the word HOT red next!
