5-speeds were just starting to get started back then.

heh.. hate to break it to you Hammy... My fiat came with a five speed back in 1967. While it was an expensive car at the time, that was about the start of when five speeds starting showing up in cars.. it took a good ten or fifeteen years to start seeing them in the econoboxes. Heck, my 1988 Hyundai Excel had a five speed.

Your fancy dancy imports don't count. tongue.gif My '82 Corvette runs a 4-speed, no 5-speedy option back then. I think it was mid 80ish when they started popping up everywhere. Now there are no 4 speeds made anywhere today that I know of.

or you can just play with your clutch smile.gif
press clutch, down shift, sratr slowly relaesing the clutch smile.gif

The point of the whole thing is to do things fast without breaking anything. Second, at high rpm, the gear won't even get in if you don't rev up. What you describe is plan and simple downshiifting.

my sisters 87 acura doesnt have a fifth gear and i was pushing that thing at 110 with four fat people in the car. me included.... and it was at 6000 rpms. that is in fourth gear. seems like tibby gears arent geared that great. am i wrong? i know mine revs at like 4500 when i am going 80-90. i haven taken my car over 100 cause it has 114,000 miles on it and i dont know how long these cars last.

i have 160,000 miles on my car and i take it to 120mph and 6500rpm daily!!
bottom line, its doesnt damage anythign keeping a car at high rpm, cause if it did the manufacture wouldnt it allow it to go that high, it may just wear some parts a little faster than if u kept it at 3000rpm all the time. the rpm range is designed bye hundreds of people and thousands of hours were put into designing this motor, everything you can do with the motor is "safe" and i use that word loosly, meaning it stops at 6500rpm cause at 7500 is when damage will occur (guessing). and one last thing our motors are DOHC!!!!! DOHC motors are MADE to rev high!

Have you changed pistons or piston rings?

After running on high RPM, should I let the engine to run on idle for couple of minutes? To make oil and antifreeze go in the engine.

Always before I turn the car off I let it idle for a bit, then give it a quick little rev to get everything clear.

generally, it is rare for me to be on my car hard and then to bring it to a halt and shut it down... even just the few seconds it takes to coast into a parking lot should allow everything to stabilise..

Unless you are running a turbo.. then I would recommend a timer..
