Default Heater on when racing?????

Okay..check it..I just heard something from this kid that thinks he knows everything and everything about racing. Well, at least he does. I tend to just listen to him and keep quiet while laughing to myself about the idotic things he says. Anyway, he said that when you race, you should turn on your heater because it actually gets rid of the hot air in your engine bay. Like I said, usually I don't listen to anything he says but this is kind of questionable because I heard this long time ago as well.

Any insight?

Your heater will help with your temp if you are overheating and it could possibly help in the quarter but I doubt it most people run there cars as cool as possible!
For example ice on the intake
not starting the car till you get near the burnout box
opening the hood after you run
all these are examples of cooling the car!
everyone has there trade secrets for running faster but I doubt that running your heater would really help that much!

wouldn't that take power away from the engine anyway (running the heater)?

The heater operates on the same coolant that runs through your radiator... This coolant flow is regulated by your thermostat. Thus, if your cooling system is functioning correctly, the heater has no impact on the temperature of your car OR the coolant. The thermostat will make sure of that.

That being said, there is no advantage to having the heater on while "racing".

If your car is having problems overheating in an emergency, the heater may help evacuate some of the heat... Depends on what the problem is. But that's only because the car is OVERLY hot and the standard cooling system is somehow malfunctioning.

I read that turning the heat but not running the fan dispels some of the high temp in the engine.

As Red stated. If your engine is running properly, turning on the heater, fan on or off will not make a difference. Your thermostat still opens at around 180 degrees, allowing cooler water into the engine and allowing the hot water to flow to the radiator.

If your car is overheating, then yes, the additional heat drawn out of the system via the heater helps, otherwise, it makes no difference what so ever.

Tell him to check his VTEC fluid, and change it every 500 miles for better performance.
