Would it make any difference in performance to header wrap a intake manifold, along with a CAI?

 

I am doing this, actually I have a wee bit complex setup...

I have a 2.75 CAI tube with a 2.5" header wrapped CAI tube INSIDE it. Same bends in both, very effective. At idle the IAT still reads outside airtemp.

Requires two holes to be cut, one for each pipe, but even random will agree that 2.5" yields the best flow, and HP.

Your question: Yes it will work.

To be honest, I do NOT think it would help to heat wrap the Intake manifold. The Intake manifold absorbs most of it's heat from the direction connection to the head. Heat wraping would just insulate it from the engine compartment air.

For example. Jaws021 has a WRX hood scoop that basically directs air flow right onto the intake manifold. His intake manifold is not significantly cooler than a tibby with a normal hood. It IS cooler, but not by much. (one of these days were going to do some actuall temp comparisons).

If you had a spacer between the IM and the head to block the heat transfer to the IM, then the heat wrap would be a good idea, but on a stock setup, it would just insulate the IM allowing it to retain the heat from the head, and transfer that heat to the intake air.

 

Have the IM thermal coated and install Random's spacer,it will isolate the manifold from the engine heat. If you thermal coat the TB also and feed a CAI to it you got a good cold-air setup.

 

Oops, Headre wrapping the IM... noooo Random's right, I thought you meant header wrapping the CAI. Yes as most of the heat of the IM comes from the head, you would want to get a phelmonic spacer for the head to IM. Header wrapping the IM will just keep the heat in.

P.S. Random where can I get one of those spacers?

I've having them made for the gen1 and gen2 engines. (MAF and MAP).

They should be done in about 90 days, but I don't want to give a date and then miss it, so I'll just say coming in 3-6 months.

 

I'd love to get a spacer but no one makes one for the Kia Spectra

 

What about having the IM Ceramic Coated on the inside? In theory, it would prevent the heated IM from transfering the heat to the air passing through it.

 

having the IM ceramic coated will be a good idea,... im not sure if it will be worth the $$$ though

On headers and high heat applications,... ceramic coating makes a big difference, but on the IM, i dont think it will give that much of a difference
