Um.... here you go. Thought i'd post it here so everyone can see. I'm trying to find a good 5th gear replacement. If anyone has anything to add, just add it.

I was looking at this to find a replacement 5th gear with a higher gear ratio. I wasn't able to find anything.

The Final drive on the 02+ Elantras is 4+ as opposed to our 3.6 From what I understand, it would decrease overall acceleration, but it would improve gas mileage on the highway.

I think I'm going to leave my transmission the same unless I can find a good replacement 5th gear.

is higher geared more for speed or lower gear ratios?
my thinking would be get a beta 2, add a beta 2 cvvt 4th cause its shorter, and w/e for 5th. the 1.8 has .878 for 5th and the 2.0 has .825 so sholdnt the 1.8 be longer? everyone says the 1.8 5th is shorter then the beta 1 2.0 and the beta 2 goes higher then that. (for example beta 1 2.0 redlines in 4th at 100, beta 2 110, but what does the 1.8 redline in 4th at? if its the other way around and shorter means higher speed swap in a 1.8 4th and beta 2 cvvt 5th.

the beta 2 final drive gearing would probably be good with the supercharger because of the torque right? (nice to know if u want to go more extreme u can get the final drive...

Higher drive gear = lower accel, faster top speed, better gas milage on that gear
Higher final drive = faster accel, lower top speed, better performance across all gears
Lower = opposite

That's how i understand it. I just want a higher 5th. I think the car is great but i'm at about 3.5k-4kRPM at 70

This has always been one of my interests too...

DTN, looks like our 2001's have a 0.878 ratio while all other RD1's and 2000 RD2's have 0.825. I'm sure it's posted elsewhere, but can someone with an RD1 or 2000 RD2 post their RPM's at 70mph to compare to DTN's car? I'm wondering what the actual difference is.

Holy heck... I missed that. 01 Tiburons have the lowest 5th gear ratio there is! dang. I was reading the 2000 2.0 chart instead of the 2001! Dude, I'm going to the junk yard with a gp tool kit, pin punch and a gear puller. I need a 2.0 2000 or lower Tiburon 5th gear.

Good thing you posted them all. I'll probably do that swap pending the results. Tranny is off for a while anyways.

That can't be right. The ratio is linear 4K @ 80 = 6K @120 and 8K @140

It looks like they took the 1.8L transmission and slapped it on the 2.0 in 2001. For those interested in the best of both worlds, the 1.8 tranny with a pre 2001 2.0 5th gear swap looks to be the best.

I contacted Hyundai parts department here in my city today for information about the 5th gear swap.

P/N:43240-28031 Price: $71.50 Item description: 5th gear assembly

P/N:43384-28002 Price: $28.83 Synchro ring
Your prices may vary, but the part numbers should be universal.

Currently, my 2001 Tiburon is reading 2,500 RPM at 50PH with the stock transmission gear. That's caluclated to about 3,000 at 60 mph, 3,500 at 75, 4,000 RPM at 80, and a top redline speed of 6500rpm at 130mph. . This swap should increase the top speed and also gas milage.

Can someone else with a 96-99 2.0 Tiburon post a RPM and Speed in 5th?

Here's the file I was thinking of!

right click, save as, remove the .jpg off the end of the filename, since it's an .xls file on a tolerant server.

I don't know who authored it (not me), but it should be in the file properties.

here's the file rehostedAttachment 557

Not only are alot of those values wrong, but they're incomplete. That document does not even include 5th gear, 6th gear, nor year models. The gear ratios do not jive with what is stated on HMAService.com. There is no model of tiburon with a 1st gear that is 2.8, and the 4th gears are much lower on that document then our 5th gear.

Are those for automatics only?
