Fuel Pump Sound/jumping Question

Because I'm a dumbass, I forgot to mention that my gas gauge stopped working. It would read topped-out full until the tank was almost empty then it would read 1/8 full until I put gas in it and right back to reading topped-out. I don't know if this would indicate an impending fuel pump death or not as I'm not sure if it's all so closely related or not.
