or your could swap in an elantra tranny, I have a 98 with a 2000 elantra trans in it and I'm about 3500rpm at 80mph.

i got a 3.056 in mine extra long for the turbo now, but the one i had before for 4.294

the ring gear and the input shaft is about 100 buck here from hyundai servicee here but if you want longer 5th then go with the 3.056

55mph=2500 rpm
65mph=3000 rpm

hope this helps

How does lengthening 5th affect performance? I am interested in doing this, it would save on gas too. As hamhead always says .. the term highway miles isn't really appropriate on the tib because of it's aggressive gearing and very short 5th, 70mph is over 3k on the tach.

it will only affect top speed positively, and acceleration negatively. you're not really trying to accelerate fast in 5th gear though anyway.

as supry said, the elantra tranny is a great idea for anyone wanting a bit better fuel economy. i know 5th gear is taller, and i believe 4th may be by just a smidgen too.

fing02.gif Hamhead quote, very nice.

Having a longer 5th for gas mileage really isn't a bad idea. It will probably pay for itself over time. Of course, with N\A, your probably going to have to downshift to 4th to get any passing performance out of the car.

Mad's 3.056 sounds just about perfect, since you don't wanna go too long on the gear and put more stress on the tranny itself.

it's funny.. this is one of those areas where I am spoiled. My last couple of cars have all had pretty aggressive gearing. In comparision, the tib is a highway cruiser.

My old excel topped out at 95mph with a tail wind and going downhill. It was SCREAMING at that speed too.

My fiat has a 4.40 rear.. 70MPH is done at just over 4000 on the tach in fifth...

But I will admit, it would be nice to be able to cruise along effortlessly at 70mph and only pull a lazy 2500 on the tach.. unfortunatly, unless you were boosted you would have to downshift for anything more than the slightest hill.
