dreams of 1.8L in 2.0L block shattered.
Okay, I finally got my grubby little hands on a Beta 1.8L of my very own to rip apart. It came out of a 1998 Elantra.
The first think I noticed was that the block had "RD18" stamped on the side. The Beta1 2.0L has "J220" stamped on the side of it. The Beta2 has "XD20" stamped on the side of it. Whoops. There went the theory that the 2.0L and 1.8L shared blocks. Well, I was hoping it was just a casting mark. That the blocks were the same.
My hope was in vain.
The 1.8L block is 11" tall the 2.0L J2 block is 11.35" tall. 0.35" = 8.89mm My measurements weren't that exact, so I'm guessing it's an even 9mm taller.
We know the 1.8L has a 85mm stroke
we know the 2.0L has a 93.5mm stroke
That's an 8.5mm difference.
I had always assumed, that Hyundai used a shorter stroke crank for the 1.8L (they do), and longer rods in the same block as the 2.0L.
It now appears that the rods are nearly identical (but different), and it is the BLOCK's that are different as well. The pistons to appear to be the same, but I'm sure they are different in some small degree. I won't know till I put the 2 side by side.
I had previously though that in addition to the longer rods, that the 1.8L used a semi domed piston. Nope, it appears to use a slightly smaller combustion chamber.
The combustion chamber design (head) also appears to be different as well. I've got photos on my digital camera, and I'll edit them, and upload them later.
As dissapointed as I am with the blocks being different, I must say, this is one SWEET motor. It turns over with about 3 lbs of force on the crank pully (with the head off), the pistons are clean (for a beta) the cylinders are in great shape, the head is in great shape. Heck the cams/valve train was cleaner than any other motor I've ever seen. This 1.8L is in GREAT shape. My dad's gonna get a great new motor shortly! (he has 1997 Tib 1.8L Revison A)
In theory, I can still do it, it's just not going to be as easy as I thought. I'll have to have custom extra long rods made to use the 1.8L crank in the 2.0L block. flaming_

The very first BETAs had the chain guard over the cam chains; they stopped that very shortly after the engines came out. My original motor still has it; my new(er) one currently in the Tib does not. I have no clue what it was originally there for...

jaw_drop eek! does this mean I cannot use my 1.8 crank in my 2.0 motor?
I already have a 1.8 flywheel, sitting at home. I also have ordered the CNK 8:5:1 pistons for the 1.8 motor being made at this time.
Should I tell Chris to make my pistons for the 2.0 block or what? sad.gif
Help cause I dont wanna ruin my motor. Ive been without a car for too long and this is bad news for me for sure also. cry

For the moment, I don't know that you CAN use the 1.8L crank in the 2.0L block.
I've got to rip apart the bottom end of both motors to compare crank's, bearings, journals..rods, etc..etc...etc...
That's what I'm doing tonight.
my "hope" at this point is that we can use the 1.8L crank with custom longer rods, in the 2.0L block, but those longer rods may hit something....
I won't know till I get it all ripped apart and measured.
