Simply put, it's a solid slab that bolts to the bottom of the block to add rigidity and transfer stress. Basically it connects all the studs so that vibration from the rods is handled by all of them at as a whole rather than each individually. To the best of my knowledge (which admittedly is limited) most imports just connect the main studs inside the sump, while domestic V8s tend to bolt a single piece the caps and walls like a spacer between the pan and block. This is supposed to relieve the bearings. Basically if you plan to build a serious engine it's a must.

ok... I've never seen that in our engines, I think there are things more important in our engines.

Hmm maybe it is time to go with a 20b rotary engine you can go to 10k rpm with full boost and keep on going!

Actually that is encouraging especially since I would say that could have been prevented with a better tune and possibly a better oiling and fuel system.
