I have found that spray on wheel cleaner full strenth works great. Make sure the engine is cool and spray everything. Let it sook for a few minutes and then spray it all off with with a garden hose.

Anything that didn't come clean use a cloth and spray wheel cleaner on it and wipe it down, then spray it off. I have done this for years and the wheel cleaner has never messed anything up. It works great.

well, at work to do this, we use a light duty foaming degreaser as an engine shampoo. YOu just spray that stuff all around, scrub the heavily soiled areas and rinse it all off. After that, i just use a light all purpose degreaser to finish up what ever is left behind, and then use the appropriate detail dressings to shine it all up for show. Hope this helps.
P.S. Sorry i don't have any product names for you, our work uses products from a small locally based company so there is no generic names.

And if you have an aftermarket intake, thus an exposed filter? and mine is a Dragon Air filter, so it's foam-based, I'm pretty sure probably the least amount of water-resistance available smile.gif

Easy, just cover the intake filter with a garbage bag and tie tight.

Or...

Take the filter off, put some saran wrap around the tube, and rubberband it on.

Simple Green. Spray it on concentrated. Scrub the hard spots and rinse off.

There's this foaming detail stuff you can use afterwards. Spray it on and let it sit. Then wipe off the excess. It will look like Liquid Wet in your engine bay.
