Default Can you make a home made phelmonic spacer?

No one make a phelmonic spacer for a Kia Spectra and probably ont anytime soon. I asked about header wraping the IM but without a spacer Random said it would just hold in the heat. Not a good thing.

So I need a spacer. If I want one I'm going to have to make one. Can this be done? What materials do you use? How do you do it?

I figure if I can get the material, I can take the IM off and trace out where the holes need to be then use a drill and a dremel to make it. Maybe some of that 1500 degree header paint also.

Need some help.

There was someone on the board here who works in a shop that uses PHENOLIC material (special plastic resin). He was considering making spacers for the beta.

If you contact him, and send him a stock gasket, he should be able to make one for you (assuming he agrees, and you two work out some mutual agreemment.). Heck I'm assuming the accent guys will want this too, so it's just a matter of time before someone starts making them for the accent.

The contact I made that is making the BETA units is willing to make a spacer for KIA's, but you would have to find someone willing to finance an inital order of at least 10, at $90 a unit. If you order 50, they drop down to $60 a unit.

E-mail me if you want the details.

Is there any way I can buy some of this PHENOLIC material from somewhere?

Here's the thread you should look through. Ask electrichead.

Good luck.

In the thread it says 10 mm or roughly 1/4 in.

If I don't replace the studs will it be thick enough to block the heat? This going on a Kia Spectra?

I'm fast running out of answers but here's my stab.

Measure how much extra stud you have sticking out from the bolts. Make the spacer that thick.

Less spacer will mean less heat block. But the important part is the coefficient of thermal transfer for the spacer material is much less then metal to metal. I'd say that something is better than nothing.

I made spacers from phenolic canvas for the 1.6 dohc accents and they are only 1/8" thick and work great. They are not cheap to make unless you do a batch. You have to have a stock gasket put into autocad then cnc machine it or you could just buy a sheet of phenolic canvas and trace it out and drill and dremel it. I will do a batch if you get enough people together with deposits.
