Default CAM install....

How difficult is it to install the 1.8 cam? This local shop which I ordered it from...4 days to get in. NOT..Two weeks to get it in. I'm picking it up tomorrow. They want $100.00 for the install. Is this a suggested self-install? I have printed out the "how to install 1.8 Semi Hi Intake Cam" ....so im on the right path. Any thoughts?

$100 for the install is not bad. It is a PITA do it yourself, and if you do it wrong, you might end up acting as a dating service for your pistions and valves as they meet up.

For $100, I would let them do it.

Lastly, If you can, send back the 1.8L cam and get the 2001 Elantra 2.0L cam.

Minor correction: If the dealership will install it AND warranty it for you, then get the 2001 Elantra intake cam as suggested.

If they aren't going to warranty either one, then get the 1.8L intake cam.

The Elantra cam is "sufficiently lumpy" that it could cause mechanical issues further down the road. It would be best only to use this cam in a motor that Hyundai will warranty, or that you are comfortable with working on if it breaks.

If you bought it from a "rice shop" then you're probably gonna bite it either way. wink.gif

Quite honestly, the 2.0L stock intake cam and the 2.0L 2001 Elantra intake cam look identical by just glancing at it. You could probably install the 2001 Elantra 2.0L intake cam, and if you ever break a valvespring / HLA, you can claim ignorance.

It has a Hyundai part number on it, and it directly fits into the head. Unless the technician was really looking at the part number reference, they would never know.

I think im going to try to do it...It doesn't look to be that hard to do (after reading that Elantra's CAM install page and seeing the shop manual for it. Everything seems pretty layed out. I will need to go buy a tourque wrench. Local autozone/pepboys carry them? A few questions..........

Can I goto local Hyundai and buy the gasket and also the 11 bolts? I want to be preparer..I can always return if NEED be.

Blip, = lightly tap. He just turned the starter for a moment, and that rotates the engine.

So turn over 1 mark? Or slightly/quickly turn it over..as if i were starting it..but not as long...real brief. Is that correct?
